MEL'S FAVORITE THINGS
Hi lovely listeners,
As many of you know, investigative journalists and true crime podcasters don’t make a living wage when their programs are in the early stages. If you’re a member of the Researcher or Investigator’s Club on The In Between Podcast’s Patreon, you understand that well and you’re willing to throw a little extra at creators like me. I want to tell you from the bottom of my heart, you are so appreciated. It might be something as simple as gas in the tank so I can drive to Lebanon County, PA to cover Veronika’s story, or a meal while I’m on the road to interview folks in West Virginia about Jack’s case. Hell more often than not you’re helping me keep the lights on, so I can edit these episodes. I want to say thank you. Always, thank you.
I’m a one-woman-show over here. I research, travel, interview, write, record, edit, post, and advertise and market all my work, to bring light to these cases. It’s a full-time gig, but it pays part-time. The other day, our sixteen-year-old asked, “How much do podcasters make?” Damn. That was a shot to the heart. “Not much,” was the answer, but the question has been plaguing me for days. I was thinking about the work that I do. I’m squeaking by, but the work I and my fellow investigative podcasters are doing is good, important work. I wanted to reframe the answer to our kid’s question, “How much do podcasters make?” into “Not a whole helluva lot, but we try to help people by shining a light on unsolved cases, or injustice and that work is worth so much more…” All that to say…we gotta keep the lights on and feed our families, so I’ve joined the Amazon Affiliate Program in the hopes that a little extra might come in to help with the costs of creating this show and paying the bills.
All you have to do: When you need something at Amazon and it’s on my list, click and buy. That’s it. I’ll continue to add to this list, but when you need an item, just click and buy from Amazon and The In Between Podcast and my family’s bills get paid.
Thank you so much, y’all.

About
The Show
May 1990. New Hampshire.
Gregg Smart had just been murdered in the condo he shared with his young wife, Pamela Smart and just down the road your host, Mel Barrett, was fifteen-years-old and absolutely believed what her family and neighbors were telling her: Twenty-two-year-old Pamela Smart used her sixteen-year-old lover to murder her husband. Now, thirty-four years later, Mel questions what she was told. Breaking down the case in real time and speaking candidly with the people of New Hampshire, the legal team, and the woman her people are convinced is guilty, Pamela Smart.
To this day the people of New Hampshire are split right down the middle when it comes to the question: did she do it? Did she conspire with her teenage lover to kill her husband. Or is she also a victim of an unfair justice system that railroaded her?
There is no in between for anyone in the state of NH. It’s completely black and white. In this first season of The In Between Podcast, Mel has made it her mission to find the grey areas, while not falling down the rabbit hole of the Pamela Smart true crime fandom nor the vitriolic dark spaces of the people who want to hang this woman in the town square.
Tune in to Patreon on XX every week for new episodes starting in September, 2024..
